Toyota Financial Services Philippines (TFSPH) successfully launched 1st MVP of myTOYOTA Wallet application in October 2021. The 1st MVP consists of key main features for Toyota user to be able to transact via Toyota Wallet at Toyota dealers, e-Commerce website (myTOYOTA), and Kinto application. As for 2022, TFSPH aims to extend the feature lists of an e-wallet for users, and continue to improve application experiences.

As a product designer in an agile team, I was mainly responsible for gathering requirements, conducting research, and proposing design solutions while balancing business goals and technical feasibility. I delivered the work as small, sprint-ready design tickets and also moderated design reviews with clients in the Philippines and Japan.

What we wanted to achieve

Previously, the application was dedicated to credit card, making a payment via credit card only, but the company want to integrate the capability of E-wallet, allow users to cash in and make a payment via available balance. I were questioned that how if users are familiar with the current behavior then the application suddenly altered to the new version so users may struggled with that, to tackle this, I had defined some goals below;

  1. Ground the flow in real behavior and market patterns
Base the journey on existing user behavior and common e-wallet conventions, ensuring the new Cash In experience feels familiar and easy to understand.

  2. Define the key entry points and integration steps
Map the expected path from the Cash In entry on the landing screen through method selection and BPI account linking, so implementation requirements are clear and consistent.

  3. Align stakeholders with a clear end-to-end journey
Create a visual user journey assumption to make the cash-in flow easy to discuss, validate, and agree on across design, product, and engineering.

Key solutions

  1. Maintaining the existing interaction pattern
The main design approach was based on the existing interaction patterns and references from other well-known e-wallet applications in the Philippine market, in order to identify the common ground in how people use e-wallet apps. Due to the tight timeline and project budget, we did not conduct a full new discovery process.

  2. Using the existing component
As we introduced a big changes to users, I have to used as much as the same visual representative, to reduce the learning curves in the UI by developing common and reusable patterns.

  3. Unified design flow documentation Created a single source of truth for the design to support flow discussions and make handoff more seamless. I mapped the developer APIs and embedded them into the design flow so the team can clearly see which APIs are involved at each step.

To validate our assumptions within a tight timeline, I ran a remote prototype test. Target users were given two tasks: “Cash in from the homepage” and “Cash in from the wallet screen.” These tasks were designed to confirm that users could easily find and initiate cash-in from the homepage despite major layout changes, and also locate the same action from the wallet area. The test assessed whether users could navigate the redesigned interface intuitively and whether the behaviors we assumed from other e-wallet apps matched real user expectations.

Final outcome

Handing over the design file to the developer is a crucial task in ensuring a smooth transition from design to implementation. To facilitate this process, I organized an internal discussion with the developer team to establish a seamless handoff procedure. The outcome of this collaborative effort was the creation of a comprehensive documentation illustrating the entire journey of the new feature, intricately linked with the relevant API.

By adopting this method, developers gain a clear understanding of each step in the user journey and can easily identify the corresponding API calls needed for implementation. This approach not only streamlines the handoff process but also promotes effective communication between the design and development teams, fostering a collaborative environment for successful feature implementation.

Impact delivered

After launching the myToyota Wallet application in early 2023:

  1. Revamped the app to enhance e-wallet functionality, growing monthly transaction value from PHP 0.6M to PHP 1.6M within the first 2 months after launch (~167% increase)

  2. Established an agile designer–developer collaboration process, improving sprint alignment and reducing handoff friction across teams.
